The Hellenic Survey of Geology and Mineral Exploration (EAGME) continues consistently its efforts to identify and utilize the country’s geothermal potential.
In this context, EAGME has resumed drilling operations in the northern part of the Sidirokastro geothermal field in Serres, with the construction of a second large-diameter exploratory borehole. The drilling is planned to reach a depth of approximately 160 m, while the geothermal reservoir is expected between 100–160 m, containing fluids with temperatures around 75oC.
It is worth noting that the first large-diameter exploratory borehole (Sd-18P) reached a depth of 198 m and encountered geothermal fluids at 75oC at a depth of 160 m. The drilling operations for the first borehole began in September 2021 and were successfully completed at the end of October 2021.
Upon completion of the drilling works in the Sidirokastro geothermal field, the necessary pumping tests are planned to take place within 2022. The drilling operations in the area of Charopo, Sidirokastro (Serres), are being carried out using EAGME’s own technical equipment (SOILMEC drill rig) and by the Authority’s technical and scientific personnel.
The drilling program aims both to expand the Sidirokastro geothermal field and to improve knowledge of the characteristics of the area’s deeper geothermal reservoir, with the common goal of ensuring the rational and sustainable utilization of the geothermal resource for the benefit of the local community and regional development.
This specific program is implemented under Action 1: “Research for the expansion of confirmed geothermal fields in the areas of (a) Sidirokastro and (b) Erateino and Erasmio,” which is part of the Subproject “Actions for the rational and sustainable exploitation of geothermal energy – GEOTHERM,” included in the Project “Studies and research supporting the energy sector of industry and entrepreneurship – OPYGEK,” funded by the Operational Program “Competitiveness, Entrepreneurship and Innovation (EPAnEK),” one of the ESPA operational programs for the period 2014–2020.
The General Director of the Hellenic Survey of Geology and Mineral Exploration, Mr. Dionysios Goutis, stated: “EAGME, with its experienced and specialized scientific and technical staff, plays a leading role in identifying suitable areas for the utilization of geothermal fields. The second borehole in Sidirokastro strengthens the National Plan for Climate and Energy and aims to locate and highlight sites that can support the development of geothermal energy.”
