The General Director of the Hellenic Survey of Geology and Mineral Exploration (EAGME), Mr. Dionysios Goutis, delivered the mineral deposit study for the Public Mining Area (PMA) of Kimmeria, Xanthi, to the Deputy Minister of Environment and Energy, Ms. Alexandra Sdoukou, during an event organized by the Association of Mining Enterprises (SME) celebrating its 100th anniversary, which took place at the EAGME facilities.
EAGME, as the national authority responsible for public geological and mining research, conducted an extensive mineral resource study in the Public Mining Area of Kimmeria, Xanthi, within the framework of the OPYGEK Project.
The Public Mining Area of Kimmeria covers a total area of 237 square kilometers, with mineralization consisting mainly of magnetite, pyrite, chalcopyrite, and molybdenite, and smaller quantities of scheelite. The area was previously exploited during the 1970s by the “Metallurgical Company of Greece S.A.” owned by Prodromos Bodosakis.
Upon delivering the study file to Ms. Sdoukou, Mr. Goutis stated: “A new mining area, complete with a comprehensive and detailed exploitation dossier, is now in the hands of the Ministry of Environment and Energy. This is solid proof of the consistent and methodical work carried out by EAGME over time. I hope the process for announcing the relevant leasing tender will move forward quickly. We will continue with the same dedication the national effort to increase the country’s reserves of Strategic and Critical Raw Materials, utilizing the recent €15 million funding from YPEN, with the ultimate goal of reducing Greece’s and the European Union’s dependence on imports of critical raw materials.”
