On October 17, 2021, Mr. Panagiotis Sambatakakis, Director of Water Resources and Geothermal Energy at H.S.G.M.E., spoke on the ERT Weekend program about the protection of Attica through projects and decisive interventions in its urban and peri-urban areas, aiming to prevent future flooding events.
In particular, he referred to the studies that H.S.G.M.E. has been conducting for many years, as well as the excellent cooperation with the Region of Attica. He also presented a topographic map showing the secondary streams located in the recently burned areas of Attica that flow into the Kifisos River.
Mr. Sambatakakis also spoke about the cementification of Athens, which has now reached 70% — a fact that practically means that the stormwater accumulating in the drainage network flowing toward the Kifisos is many times greater than it was in the 1940s.
