With great success, the Hellenic Survey of Geology and Mineral Exploration (H.S.G.M.E.) held, on Wednesday (14/7/2021), the presentation of the commemorative album “100 Years of Geological Service in Greece (1919–2019)”.
Responding to the invitation of the host, the General Director of the HSGME, Mr. Andreas Tsokos, Ministers, Deputy Ministers, General Secretaries of Ministries, Rectors, Academics, Presidents of Institutions, Organizations, and Chambers, as well as representatives of the Church, the Region, Local Government, and the business community honored the event with their presence.
The event took place at the modern facilities of the HSGME in Thrakomakedones, in the premises that will host the new National Geological Museum. Guests had the opportunity to admire in the foyer rare exhibits that will be displayed in the new museum.

His Eminence Metropolitan Athenagoras of Ilion, Acharnes and Petroupolis; the Minister of Digital Governance, Kyriakos Pierrakakis; the Secretary General for Energy and Mineral Resources of the Ministry of Environment and Energy, Alexandra Sdoukou; the Secretary General for Waste Management of the Ministry of Environment and Energy, Manolis Grafakos; and the Secretary General for International Economic Affairs and Extroversion of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ioannis Smyrlis.
Video messages were sent by the Minister of Environment and Energy, Kostas Skrekas; the Minister of Labor, Kostis Hatzidakis; the Minister of Migration and Asylum, Notis Mitarakis; the Deputy Minister of Education and Religious Affairs, Zetta Makri; the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Kostas Vlasis; the Deputy Minister of Development and Investments, Christos Dimas; and the Deputy Minister of Shipping and Island Policy, Kostas Katsafados. Letters of appreciation were also sent by the Regional Governor of Attica, Giorgos Patoulis, and the Deputy Minister of Culture and Sports, Lefteris Avgenakis.
All speakers expressed their admiration for the excellent commemorative album and praised the important work of the new administration of the HSGME during its two years in office.
The General Director of the HSGME, Mr. Andreas Tsokos, in his address, after thanking the attendees, emphasized among other things: “The HSGME, as the official authority of the geological sector, having completed a century of institutional operation in the service of the country, is entering a new era with a focus on innovation, openness, and social contribution. The mission of the Hellenic Survey of Geology and Mineral Exploration, as envisioned by its people, is based on safeguarding the public interest through scientific documentation and monitoring of Geology and mineral issues, as well as contributing to every matter concerning the sustainable use of our nation’s underground wealth. It is our duty to work toward increasing the impact of the country’s development action plans and to contribute to the ‘Greece 2.0’ plan, which represents nothing less than the new Greek future.”
Extensive reference to the commemorative album “100 Years of Geological Service in Greece (1919–2019)” and the significant contribution of Earth sciences to the national effort was made by the Chairman of the HSGME Board of Directors, Konstantinos Saltas; the former Professor of Mining at the National Technical University of Athens and former President of IGME, Charalampos Tsoutrelis; and the Director of Mineral Resources and Mining and Scientific Editor of the album, Konstantinos Laskaridis.
A particularly moving moment came when the General Director of the HSGME, Andreas Tsokos, and the Secretary General for Energy and Mineral Resources of the Ministry of Environment and Energy, Alexandra Sdoukou, presented the first copy of the commemorative album to Charalampos Tsoutrelis as an honorary gesture. The event concluded with a buffet and an open discussion with the guests in the foyer of the National Geological Museum, which is expected to open its doors in October.
The event was moderated by journalist and presenter Sofia Tountouri, and all health protocols related to the pandemic were observed.
