The General Director of the Hellenic Survey of Geology and Mineral Exploration (H.S.G.M.E.), Mr. Andreas Tsokos, spoke on ERT1 and the program “Syndeseis” on January 27, 2021, about the scientific support provided by the H.S.G.M.E. to local authorities in their effort to designate the wider Lavreotiki area as a UNESCO World Heritage Site — a move that would also boost tourism and economic development.
In a live broadcast from the Port of Lavrio, with the French mining ladder as a backdrop, Mr. Tsokos discussed the coordinated efforts of local authorities, the H.S.G.M.E., the Ministry of Culture, the Greek National Tourism Organization (EOT), and the Forest Service to include Lavreotiki in the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network.
He also referred to the creation of a Mining and Metallurgy Museum and highlighted Lavrio’s unique mineral wealth, noting that 12% of the world’s known minerals — more than 750 varieties — have been identified in the region. During the live segment, drone footage showcased the Lavrio area and the French mining ladder, which was constructed in 1888.
