As part of its collaboration with the Municipality of Aristotle in Halkidiki, a team from the Hellenic Survey of Geology and Mineral Exploration (EAGME), consisting of Dr. Irene Zananiri, Head of the Department of General Geology, Geological Mapping and Applications (GEXAE), and Ms. Vasiliki Barsaki, Geologist – Geoenvironmentalist, conducted a field visit between March 30 and April 1, aiming to highlight the geological heritage of the region.
The collaboration between EAGME and the Municipality of Aristotle falls under the actions of the GEOINFRA Project: Geological Mapping Actions of Greece for the Support of Innovation and Entrepreneurship (https://bit.ly/3Ldv8Ht) (Subproject 1 – Work Package 5: Geosites – Geotrails – Geoparks, Scientific Coordinator: E. Moraiti).
The EAGME geologists met in Arnaia with the Mayor of Aristotle, Mr. Stelios Vallianos, to coordinate actions between EAGME and the Municipality for the promotion of the region’s geodiversity. The objective of these initiatives is to highlight geosites and design geotrails that will allow visitors and travelers to explore the area’s geology in connection with its biodiversity, history, and culture, thereby contributing to the sustainable development of the wider region.
During the preliminary fieldwork, visits were carried out to several sites of geological interest with the assistance of residents from Palaiochori, while modern tools such as UAVs were used to ensure optimal mapping and documentation.
