European Network of Observatories and Research Infrastructures for Volcanology – EUROVOLC
The European project “European Network of Observatories and Research Infrastructures for Volcanology (EUROVOLC)” is a Horizon 2020 initiative that brings together key organizations in volcanological research and monitoring across Europe.
The main objective of this 3.5-year competitive project (2/2018–12/2021), with total funding of €5 million and with the participation of the Hellenic Survey of Geology and Mineral Exploration (HSGME) representing Greece, is to strengthen networking and reduce fragmentation among Europe’s volcanological research and monitoring structures. The project also aims to enhance and automate both the instrumentation used in multiparametric volcanic monitoring networks and the software tools for managing and assessing data, ensuring the delivery of reliable and actionable information to civil protection authorities. To achieve these goals, four thematic areas of action were established: Community Building, Volcano–Atmosphere Interaction, Subsurface Processes, and Volcanic Crisis Preparedness and Management.
As part of the project, the online platform Volcanoes of Europe Catalogue was created and is publicly accessible. HSGME contributed to its development under the scientific supervision of Dr. George Vougioukalakis, Head of the Department of Natural Disasters within the Directorate of Natural and Technological Risk Management.
The platform contains key information on selected active volcanoes across Europe. For Greece, entries have already been made for the Santorini volcanic field, with additional data soon to be added for Methana, Milos, Nisyros, and Gyali.
